In recent times, the thought of Étienne Souriau has acquired a new and unexpected lease oflife. A thinker who was in many ways “untimely” with respect to the dominant orientationsof his time, since the 2000s he has made a “comeback” on the international philosophicalscene, thanks above all to an original reinterpretation of his transmodal ontology, as wellas a re-evaluation of his comparative aesthetics.

Representative of a sophisticated rationalist positivism, not alien to the Husserlian canonand not insensitive to the motives dear to the gnoseological debate of Cartesian andKantian matrix or to some characteristic themes of classical metaphysics, Souriau pursuesthe ideal of a constructive philosophy, capable of understanding and at the same timepromoting the advancement of the process of creation, conceived as a set of “poetic acts”and creative operations. Using an epistemologically aware method, attentive to scrutinisingthe correspondences, borrowings and reciprocal passages between one mode of existenceand another, as well as between the different art forms, Souriau invites us to rediscover inan ontological key a faculty that is too often undervalued: imagination.

The aim of this issue is to investigate Souriau’s thought in its many aspects. Contributionsare therefore expected on:

  • the ontological question in Souriau;
  • Souriau’s comparative aesthetics;
  • the question of the arts;
  • the relationship with the main philosophies of the 20th century from Bergson toHusserl, from Heidegger to Merleau-Ponty, and from Dufrenne to contemporaries).
